FAQ

ANSWER

1

Why are you raising money for a school in the UAE?

Firstly, the planners of the challenge chose this school (not me!). Secondly, it is for the benefit of under privileged and orphaned children in Ajman, UAE. Third, if you are in the UAE as an EXPAT, you will know the importance of education and making something of your life. If you did not achieve a certain level of education, you probably would not be able to enjoy the benefits of living and working in the UAE.

2

You say the money raised goes towards a charity school in Ajman in UAE, but I thought the UAE had lots of money from oil?

Well this is partly true. However, all EXPAT children have to pay school fees to be educated in the UAE.

I intend to get a more in depth answer to this question in due course. But for now, the school for which the money raised will go to is a registered charity in the UAE.

3

What’s your commitment to the challenge?

a)    I have paid 2,200 AED to start the ball rolling for this challenge. This is from my own pocket!

b)    I have spent much time and effort planning and creating writing content for this web site with a view to build and attract interest to this challenge and my commitment to completing it! Many days off work, I have not seen the light of day because of this commitment

c)    You will see from the training, there has been some commitment in terms of spare time. In the final 4-6 week, this commitment to training will rise to a level that will hopefully allow me to successfully complete this challenge.

d)    As well as an exercise bike and mountain bike for training and undertaking this challenge, I have invested in technology that will allow for some interesting HD video and 16MP and 3D images. This will be useful for content for this web site as well as for any sponsors who would like to back this web site.

e)    Finally, as this web site is launched in late October, I am making a further commitment (xx,xxx) AED to ensure all the planning and commitments during the five day challenge can be met one month in advance (from my own savings).... so I need your support, please become a sponsor!

4

I do not know you, why should I sponsors you?

Well, good question.

PERSONAL - Why does anyone sponsor someone or give to charity?

In my case, not only do I intend to undertake the challenge, meet my fundraising target, but I also intend to visit the charity school after the money is spent, so people following this can see just how the money has been spent (if the school allows this!)

CORPORATE - If you are a corporate sponsor with financial resources to spare, I can give some value back to any financial commitment via PR and things linked to this web site.

Think of the last charity event you went to and try and remember all the sponsors’ names? Well this site will be online for between 1-2 years in one form or another, so does this answer your question?

5

How will the money be used?

Capital project for a new roof, new fixtures and fittings and other facilities to improve learning environments.

6

Is this an organised challenge?

Yes, an organisation based in Dubai has planned this challenge. This includes the planning of a route, advise on preparation / training and fundraising, accommodation etc.

7

What is the most difficult aspect of preparing for this challenge?

TIME!  TIME!  TIME!

I speak to people who work for government and private organisation with shorter working hours and if I were in their position, the preparation for this challenge would a lot easier, especially when you finish work at 15.00! However, in reality, I work 10-12 hour days (including travel). And after you have eaten, there is not much time left for training, socializing, fundraising etc.

8

Why did you buy an exercise bike when you have a mountain bike and are a member of a Gym?

For mixture of reasons, namely:

a)     Preparation time to go out on the mountain bike can reduce the available training time

b)    To reduce the number of excuses for not training!

c)    During the summer months with high temperatures and humidity, this has been useful!

d)    Other considerations were it takes another 30 mins to get to the gym via car after work so yet more time taken from my free time. Also, cycling a night, even though I have lights, it is not the safest of things to do! (Even though I try and avoid any roads)

9

How do you personally benefit from me sponsoring you?

Well it motivates me to do more training and successfully complete the challenge! It also makes me appreciate what charities go though to raise money and other people who undertake endurance challenges to rais emoney for charity!

10

Is your exercise bike or mountain bike for sale after your challenge?

NO!

I know people who have asked whether there will be a cheap mountain bike or exercise bike for sale after this challenge has been completed.... and to those individuals, “no they are not for sale ”.

In addition to this, the logo and branding for this site uses my actual mountain bike digitised! So just in case those people have not got the message..... that is a definite NO NO NO! J
