REMINDER OF 5 POLO SHIRT ORDER DELIVERED

The final three polo shirts, a requested a change in colour of the domains on the collars and swapping the sleeve images around.

As mentioned below, I am reasonably happy with the result and will see if there is interest from potential personal sponsors for purchasing a Polo Shirt as opposed to just making a pledge.

This way they receive something tangible for their money. I had hoped for more goodwill from the deisgn of logos  and supply  of 5 polo shirts.

In reality this has cost a considerable amount of money (x,xxx AED). But if it helps to achieve my fundraising target, then I suppose it will have been worth it!

FIRST MARKETING COLLATERIAL FINIALISED – THE POLO SHIRT

First delivery of two polo shirts is received. Being sent via courier, it took 6 calls and 6 explanations of a location to deliver the polo shirts to a particular location. As I was attending an evening event, I wanted to wear one of the polo shirts to create passive interest from those in attendance. Albeit the courier was nearly 2 hours late, we will see whether those people I spoke to and gave a first version of a flyer to, live up to their offer to help on a range of different ways.

I aim to wear the shirts when out and about in Abu Dhabi, whether training or in other circumstances.

LOGOS FOR CHALLENGE AND BLOG FINAILISED

As I have spent more than a decade in marketing communications, this project was an opportunity to put some of what I have learned from the past into practice for a good cause.

At the time of writing this section, the organisation who has sponsored the Polo shirts (by 50% of actual costs – allegedly!) has let me down slightly by not also offering a high resolution set of images from the design of the logo. This was explicit in the brief and the development of two logos for use on the front and back of a polo shirt.

Instead of sponsoring everything, logo development and digitisation of logos and 5 polo shirts, I have had to pay allegedly 50% of a cost value – Yes I have had to pay for them!

What was justified to be 50% goodwill ended up with a bill for another 66% of what was originally agreed - justification being linked to design work!!

So I will still need to take what has been developed and get an expert Photoshop user to convert the logos / images to a 300 dpi version for use in print etc.

LOGO and BRAND DEVELOPMENT

I wanted a combination of images and aspects that summarised the following:

·         Cycling and Mountain biking

·         Cycling in the UAE – as this is where the challenge is being undertaken

·         The challenge of preparing for the physical aspects of the challenge as well as the fundraising aspects.

·         In four or five words define what it is all about!

LOGO 1

So particular to first logo, a mountain bike (this is my actual Specialized Stump Jumper mountain bike digitized!) climbing a mountain range with a UAE flag included in an outline of the UAE was important.

LOGO 2

This had to summarize what the challenge was all about and integrate something that would create interest to picture editors or people when you are out and about, wearing a polo shirt.

Summarizing the challenge in 4 or five words is about the max amount that someone will take in at a glance. The caricature was required to create intrigue and interest. This was something I asked one of the artists in Leicester Square to draw when I went to meet the Queen in July in London. Unfortunately, her majesty was not resident at the time of my visit, but the artist was and you can see the result after digitization from other original drawing.

In all I am happy with the results, albeit it cost me a lot of money and took nearly 3 weeks to get to the final results from the organisation concerned.

EXERCISE BIKE ARRIVES

Thinking about the amount of training that has been achieved during the month or Ramadan, I decided to purchase an exercise bike. Why? Long working hours (11-12 hours including travel time), short amount or free time should allow me to slowly increase the distances that can be achieved during the week after returning home from work.

RAMADAN SEES THE START OF EARLY TRAINING FOR THE CHALLENGE

The shorter working hours helped to plan in training sessions during Ramdan. However, the heat and humidity made training very difficult outdoors.

Father’s retirement from UAE sees a lapse in training for various reasons.

FRASER RETURNS BACK TO UAE  WITH SOME FINANCIAL SUPPORT

A financial commitment by one of my parents and the “GODFATHER” and his wife makes the trip to the UK a useful one.

In addition, a commitment from another member of “THE FAMILY”  aka “The UNCLE” and his wife was also welcomed.

The actual cash sponsorship (not known) has been placed in envelopes and will be opened close to the deadline date for sponsorship revenue (27.10.2011 – 1 month prior to the event).

It was disappointing that other close family members AKA “THE BROTHERS” and some friends did not take my commitment to the challenge seriously. In fact one of the “BROTHERS”, who is renowned in the UK for buying the last round of drinks and has amassed a small fortune in assets through careful accounting, did not make a commitment because he did not think I could complete the challenge!

You will eat your words, if it’s the last thing I do on this earth” J

HD ACTION CAMERA PURCHASE

In an attempt to record parts of the challenge and to assist any corporate sponsors in achieving their marketing objectives, the action camera will record video content from the challenge itself, as well as in the build up to this challenge and after the challenge has been completed.

ANNUAL LEAVE TO THE UK

The temperature in the UAE is starting to get hot, so in addition to some personal development, some relaxation, some short mountain bike rides puts into perspective the amount of training that is required in the build up for the challenge.

FRASER REGISTERS FOR THE CHALLENGE – A Charity Cycling Challenge to raise money for Children!

In an attempt to make a commitment to the challenge, Fraser formally registers for the challenge. As a part of this commitment, he hands over 2,200 AED to cover expenses associated with the organisation of the challenge.

FIRST PLEDGE FROM THE WELSH SOCIETY IN ABU DHABI

A nice start and a good reason now to register for the challenge.

PREDGE CONDITION: - Pledge will be held by the committee until successful completion of the challenge.

I wonder if the St Georges Society will reconsider my proposal for sponsorship, considering I am English and have supported all the St Georges Events for the past two years!
